Stretching almost the entire length of the country, from north of Monterey Bay to the Paso Robles border, the Monterey AVA is the largest American Viticultural Area in the region. Its vast expanse brings diverse climates and grape varieties into play.

The key to every vineyard’s success lies in its proximity to the cool waters of Monterey Bay. In the north, the vines enjoy refreshing ocean breezes and fog, while the southern Salinas Valley opens up to warmer weather, basking in the sun with temperatures sometimes reaching 100 degrees. The Gablian and Santa Lucia ranges frame this wine paradise, moderating the temperatures with Pacific Ocean breezes.

Modern winegrowing emerged in the 1960s, building on the Franciscan missionaries’ 1790s efforts to cultivate wine grapes near their mission outposts. Today, the Monterey AVA boasts over 40,000 acres of vinifera wine grapes, reflecting its climatic diversity.

Varieties like Riesling and Pinot Noir thrive in the cool north, while Bordeaux, Rhone-style, and Zinfandel grapes flourish in the warmer south. Chardonnay remains the reigning king, covering more than 50% of the current vine production.

Established in 1984, the Monterey AVA spans approximately 100 miles from north to south, encompassing parts of Carmel Valley and Salinas Valley and featuring five smaller AVAs. While the northern region enjoys a cool, lengthy growing season, the southern part experiences higher temperature, necessitating extensive irrigation from the Salinas River.
